Zoo in the Sky: A Book of Animal Constellations Specifications

People have always looked up at the stars in wonder, seeking patterns in the sky. This gorgeous picture book, published by the National Geographic Society, introduces children to the constellations that are named for animals--Leo the Lion, the Great Bear and Little Bear, and many more. Christina Balit's striking paintings showcase each constellation against a deep blue background--animals or fantastical beasts positioned in the dark night sky, with the individual stars, metallic and iridescent, superimposed upon them. Each image is accompanied by a short, engaging, often dramatized description of the group of stars and the legends surrounding it, written by distinguished astronomer and writer Dr. Jacqueline Mitton: "Charging through the zodiac, here comes the Bull. Head down, horns thrust forward, Taurus is ready to toss the twins. But they are safe, always on the other side of the Milky Way." The front and endpapers are star maps that show the actual constellations of both the southern and northern skies. Mitton also offers a brief introduction to the constellations and two pages of related discussion on astronomy at the book's end. A lovely choice for anyone interested in the mysteries of the night sky. (Click to see a sample spread. Text © 1998 Jacqueline Mitton. Illustrations © 1998 Christina Balit.) (Ages 6 to 10) --Marcie Bovetz

Zoo in the Sky: A Book of Animal Constellations CustomerReview

I looked over the book after I received it and was so satisfied that children of any age could learn so much about the star constellations. I gave the book as a gift to my five year old granddaughter who loves to look up into a dark night with me to view the stars and Jupiter too. It is complex enough for older children and as an adult, I learn from it too.

The Bear family might not win the blue ribbon for their entry in the pumpkin

contest during the annual Bear Country Thanksgiving Festival, but they do gain

a new appreciation of the true spirit of the holiday and all they have to be

thankful for.

The Berenstain Bears and the Prize Pumpkin (First Time Books(R)) CustomerReview

We own over a dozen Berenstain Bear books, and The Berenstain Bears and the Prize Pumpkin is one of my favorites. True to life, this book tells the story of how Papa Bear is jealous of Farmer Ben's pumpkin patch, and gets quite upset at Farmer Ben's comment that Papa Bear had a "nice little pumpkin patch". Papa Bear wants to win the annual Big Pumpkin Contest...and gets obsessed "The Giant" (the pumpkin he nurtures throughout the story in hopes of winning).

As in most of the Berenstain Bear stories, Papa displays his pettiness and other faults, much to the chagrin of Mama Bear.

But in the end, the family remembers what it means to give thanks and count your blessings:

"It wasn't until they reached the crest of a hill that overlooked Bear Country that Mama decided to have her say. 'I know you're disappointed. But third prize is nothing to be ashamed of. Besides, Thanksgiving isn't about contests and prizes. It's about giving thanks. And it seems to me we have a lot to be thankful for.' Perhaps it was Mama's lecture, or maybe it was how beautiful Bear Country looked in the sunset's rosy glow. But whatever the reason, Papa and the cubs began to understand what Mama was talking about."

Although Papa Bear's behavior and comments are eyebrow raising (as usual), the story has a wonderful moral and lovely illustrations (especially the sunset and nighttime scenes!).

Zally Guevara always knows where she's going. She has a passion for maps of all kinds and can't wait to pack her suitcase and explore the world. But Zally doesn't have to wait to get her wish. With the help of a cup of magical cocoa from her grandmother, she travels to a place that only girls training to become fairy godmothers can get to—the enchanted dreamland of Aventurine, a place that has no map.

In Aventurine, Zally is given her quest: to save a fairy queen who has lost her will to live. Zally's companions are a young fairy with a broken wing, and a stallion prince. The trio's journey proves to be even more challenging than they could have imagined as they meet monsters and get lost in a ruined fairy city. All the while, Zally is making a map of Aventurine and discovering that she has a talent, passed down from generations of women in her family: understanding the thoughts of animals. But will this be enough to save the fairy queen and ensure that Zally can continue her fairy-godmother training?

The thing that I really like about this book was that all the sentences weren't the same. It did not just say "these are bananas, these are tomatoes" all the time, but integrated questions, and even characteristics of the fruits and vegetables. The pictures are bright and colorful, and made me want to go buy a piece of fruit right then. I would highly recommend this book as a useful and practical tool for learning the names of basic fruits and vegetables in both English and Spanish. It is very likely that you will find yourself practicing these words at home when you are eating a piece of watermelon, or chopping a pepper for dinner.

Karen Santorum has produced for parents and teachers a wonderfully rich volume that speaks to the regrettable fact that the subject of manners is not much discussed anymore. Mrs. Santorum has arranged a collection of stories an poems that will develop and enrich the moral imagination. Everyday Graces will be useful both as a bedside book and as a reference for home, school, and church library.

This delightful book gives examples of good manners (consideration of others) through the "story-line". I love reading it to my granddaughters when they spend the night. It opens up possible dialogue for discussion over meals or at bedtime. It has similarities to the Book of Virtues but is more directed to the "little women" living in our homes.

A toddler's graduation from diapers to the potty is always a very important moment--and one to make parents and toddlers proud! In this book, Hannah needs to have her diaper changed so she can go out and play. Then Mom and Dad bring a big box home, and Hannah is anxious to open it up and see what's inside. Is it a rocking chair? A bed for Teddy? No, it's a potty--which means it's time for Hannah to graduate from diapers. This gentle and humorous little story is charmingly illustrated and told in verse. Little girls will enjoy looking at the pictures and having the story read to them. Meanwhile, they'll start getting the idea that it's time for them to grow up, exactly like Hannah. So that at last, they'll be able to say: "I'm off to the potty, No more diapers for me! And I feel great, I am proud of ... ME! Here's a pleasant and effective new way to begin a child's toilet training. Barron's also publishes a potty book for a little boy, starring Henry. (Ages 1-4)

My two and half year old daughter loves this book! After I read it to her, she was willing to pull down her pull-up and sit on the potty. She wanted to try it when she had been refusing. My daughter asks me to read this over and over. It is very easy for a toddler to understand and does an excellent job of teaching potty training concepts to little ones. The pictures are also great for little ones! I am very glad we bought this book!

The Colors and Shapes book is a very useful tool for learning the basics of Spanish. If you want something that is easy to read and understand, this is your book. From reading this book, I think anyone would be able to learn the basic colors and shapes in both English and Spanish. My favorite part was the last page which was a picture of a colorful room full of shapes. This was a good exercise to wrap up the book and apply the words that I learned. A child would be able to use this book, and others like it in the series, to learn and then apply knowledge in every day life when seeing colors and shapes of any kind. This book doesn't just stick to simple shapes such as circle and square, but also includes words for diamond, sphere, and cone.

Greek Myths for Young Children (Stories for Young Children) RelateItems

Greek Myths for Young Children (Stories for Young Children) CustomerReview

It is very hard to find reasonably faithful collections of Greek myths that are accessible, appropriate, and appealing to small children. This is one of the few I've found. The stories are very engagingly told and--after I made powerpoint presentations about the various Greek gods and heroes and such--have definitely captured the attention of my 3-year-old.

The focus here is on Greek heroes and other encounters of humans with gods. There is not so much about the gods themselves, per se. The stories of Heracles (so named in the book), Odysseus, Jason, Theseus, Perseus, and Bellerophon are all here. The "rape of Persephone" and Eros and Psyche are the only god-only myths here. For this reason, Aliki's The Gods and Goddesses of Olympus (Trophy Picture Books) makes a really excellent companion, with very little overlap. In fact, I would recommend reading the latter before this book, to give it all a bit of context.

The writing, the taste with which the stories are retold for young children, and the story selection are all in this book's favor. What keeps me from giving it five stars is that, for the probable target audience, there aren't enough pictures. It looks like a big picture book, but there really aren't more than a handful of pictures per story. The pictures that there are, are pretty good--but even so there are problems, for example, when there was a perfect opportunity to draw the cyclops with one eye, the artist just showed a pair of giant feet. Anyway, if you child won't sit still for a chapter book, he probably won't sit still for this.

I had a few other small quibbles. For instance, I haven't the slightest clue why the author would name Hades "Pluto" when using Greek names for, e.g., Heracles.

If you are not familiar with (or have forgotten) Greek mythology, you should know that it is pretty gruesome sometimes, what with Cronus devouring his children, Heracles made to go insane and killing his children, the heroes becoming heroes by killing all sorts of monsters, etc. This version is pretty tame, but the book does rather matter-of-factly say some pretty horrible things. As a parent you'd have to be comfortable with that and you'd have to know that your kid wouldn't be terribly disturbed by it. Every day for hundreds of years, an eagle comes down and tears out Prometheus' liver? Ouch!

That is not meant as a criticism (although I would have preferred the most gruesome stuff being made less so), but just as a hopefully-helpful warning to sensitive parents.

The Snow Boun Mystery is actually my favorite Boxcar Children Book, I'm not kidding either! Once when I ran out of books to read and my Mother refused to take me to the librarie I read the whole book twice. Since I've been reading other childrens mysteries the book is harder for me to remember.Ifeel like reading it right now! some things I remember are that the Aldens Grandfather ,James Alden, has a friend who allows the Alden children his log cabin for some time. Also I remember a grocery store about a mile away and a nice family in which lives there , On the way to bring food to the Aldens one person gets stuck th others get to the Aldens and they get they get that person safe and sound where the family stays untll the storm wore off. There is also apart about finding letters in the attick, apart about Viiolet disapearing, and a part abouta closet near the fire place. I don't want to give all of it away but, it's just hard not to do.Thankyou for your time to read all about this fabulous book!

I purchased this book along with several others because of its high interest topic, for my son, who is very capable, but at times, a reluctant reader. He became quickly engrossed in the story and read it in two sittings. I recommend this book for its ability to engage and inform. I am impressed with the content of the book, which lacks no important information for any young person curious about the pursuit of Mt. Everest. The drawings and photographs are also appealing. Our son is 8 and reads at a fourth grade level, and this book is recommended for second to fourth grade readers. The bottom line for us is keeping him interested with good material, which this book accomplished easily. He is looking forward to more :)

The Essential Guide to Children's Books and Their Creators CustomerReview

I'm a children's book editor, and run a web site called "The Purple Crayon," where I review this book in detail. Here are some excerpts from that review:

The Essential Guide to Children's Books and Their Creators is a handy one-volume reference for anyone working in the field, and also both fun and informative to browse....

Set up like an encyclopedia, the Guide includes more than 475 entries and an index in 500 pages. It opens with a great "Basic Reading List" and then goes to the A-Z listing, which mostly consists of entries about specific authors and illustrators of children's books. Most are American, most are 20th century, but there are people from the 19th century and other countries (for example, George MacDonald, Carlo Collodi, Astrid Lindgren, Margaret Mahy). Some entries on living writers and illustrators are followed by a first-person statement, "Voices of the Creators."

I count 31 feature articles on other subjects, mostly types or genres of books. Examples: "African-American Children's Books," "Alphabet Books," "Series Books," "Middle Grade Fiction," and "Information Books."

I think few readers will quibble with the selections: the authors and illustrators who appear here belong here. Of course, I did find some personal favorites missing, as may just about anyone who has read many children's books....

On the whole, though, this is an excellent and compact reference. You'll find well-written and informative essays on the artists and writers you look up, and random browsing is amply rewarded. If you aren't familiar with American children's literature, this is a good place to start to learn. If you already know the field, you'll still find things you don't know.

(This book is derived from the longer and more expensive Children's Books and Their Creators (1995), which Anita Silvey edited while she was still editor-in-chief of the Horn Book magazine. This edition includes a selection of entries from that book, plus 100 new entries to bring it up to date.)

The Bear Detectives: The Case of the Missing Pumpkin (I Can Read It All by Myself Beginner Books) CustomerReview

We start of this story by hearing that Farmer Ben's first prize pumpkin can't be found anywhere. "Do not worry Farmer Ben. The BEAR DETECTIVES will find it again!" But before they can get to work finding the pumpkin, Father Bear (and his old dog Snuff) appear wanting to help. Father Bear and Snuff then rush off along the road with very little clue of where they are going

Father Bear and Snuff lead the Bear Detectives all over. Before turning the case over to the Bear Detectives, they manage to check out a "cow, brown and white. Checked out a scarecrow after a fight." "Checked out a haystack. Three pigs in a pen...put the [hand] cuffs on Farmer Ben's hen."

Of course, as soon as Father Bear turns over the case, the Bear Detectives manage to find the thief, who really wasn't a thief, right away. As it turns out, Mrs. Ben had 'stolen' the pumpkin to make pumpkin pies, and everyone (including the chicken handcuffed to Father Bear) got a pie to eat.

This book flows nicely, and is told in rhyme. The pictures add a lot to the book. They exaggerate on the misfortunes of poor Father Bear as he searches for the pie. They also are bright, colorful and funny. The story is very cute.

This was a nice book to read. It fit in nicely after we have been listening to Lori Lite's Bedtime Stories CD, like this 3 CD set: Indigo Dreams (3 CD Set): Children's Bedtime Stories Designed to Decrease Stress, Anger and Anxiety while Increasing Self-Esteem and Self-Awareness

Giving my boys with Aspergers Syndrome an actual picture seems to help aid their visualization while listening to the CD. This book allows me to be interactive about affirmations at any time of the day, while the CD is fantastic for bedtime relaxation.

For 40 days and 40 nights rain poured from the heavens, enveloping the world. Only Noah had been warned by God of the great flood-and only Noah could save life on earth. This powerful story of salvation has fascinated people of all ages for centuries. Now, four-time Caldecott Honor-ricipient Jerry Pinkney captures all the courage, drama, and beauty of this ancient parable in rich, glorious paintings. Full of sensitive detail and emotion, his art brings new life and meaning to an important message of peace. This elegant edition of Noah's Ark promises to give readers strength and hope for many years to come.

Noah's Ark (Caldecott Honor Book) CustomerReview

This is a faithful interpretation of the biblical story, rendered in breathtaking watercolor paintings which earned this book a Caldecott Honor in 2003. If I were forced to choose one version of the story, I would probably choose Peter Spier's, but Pinkney provides an original, memorable perspective, allowing the youngest readers to experience the dramatic grandeur of this story. I especially appreciate a striking images of whales, sharks and fish swimming through the submerged human cities.

The text does take a few artistic liberties -- there is greater emphasis on humanity's failure to steward the planet than our failure to live a life pleasing to God -- but this is a rather minor matter, and the great strength of this book is its masterful artwork. An outstanding addition to any child's library.
