Ferret in the Bedroom, Lizards in the Fridge (Minstrel Book) Overviews

Liz's house is like a zoo. Thanks to her dad, a zoologist, there are turtles in the kitchen, an ibex in the backyard, a hawk in the shed, a sun porch full of lizards -- and Fred the ferret.

Liz has had enough! At school, her nickname is Lizard. Her classmates think she's weird and her friends are afraid to go to her house. WIth problems like those, how is she ever going to win the election for class president?

Liz tries her hardest, but she runs into one disaster after another. So she makes the startling decision -- the animals must go. Even Fred, her pet ferret. That will make all the difference in the world...won't it?

Ferret in the Bedroom, Lizards in the Fridge (Minstrel Book) CustomerReview

The setting of the story happens in both, the school and the home of Elizabeth Robbins who is the main character.
Elizabeth's house is like a zoo and her friends are afraid to go in it.
At school, everyone calls her Liz-art because she likes animals.
There are also other characters in the story: Shane Garrison. He likes animals too. Sally, who doesn't like Jo Donna, and Jo Donna Hunt, who doesn't like Elisabeth and she acts cool because she thinks she is popular.

The story begins when Liz invites people to make posters in her house for the election and many bad things happened. For example Mr.T (a turtle) went pipi on a girl. Or when the bull attacked Sally.

The problem continues when Liz tells her father, who is a zoologist, that he must get rid of all the animals he keeps at home or she'll never win the sixth-grade class presidency.
Sally and Liz try hard to win the election, but none found success.

The resolution to the story happens when Elisabeth steps on stage and says she wanted all the animasl back because she realized those animals where her friends, and that she told her dad she wanted to get rid of them to have friends and to win class presidency.

The ending comes one day when Shane Garrison knocks on Liz's front door.
Shane said that he liked her speech and that he also liked animals and that they were his friends too. They went for a walk and then saw Jo Donna,Shane turned around and held Liz's hand.
From that moment on they became good friends.

I recommend this book because it's a fun book to read and it keeps you interested and curious about what is going to happen next.
And it teaches you a lesson: not to get rid of your real friend just to be popular.

Flotsam (Caldecott Medal Book) Overviews

On a seemingly ordinary day at the beach, a budding young scientist makes a fabulous discovery. A barnacle-encrusted underwater camera has washed up on the shore, holding a reel of film of fantastical images that no human eye has seen. Moving cities, an octopus in a lounge chair, a clockwork fish. And yet, there is one more secret, even more astonishing than these surreal scenes: the camera has journeyed not only through the depths of the ocean but through the past, hiding in its last photo a visual timeline of children from around the world. Author: David WiesnerReading Level: Ages 5-8Format: 40 pages, HardcoverPublisher: Clarion BooksISBN: 978-0618194575

Flotsam (Caldecott Medal Book) Specifications

Product Description
A bright, science-minded boy goes to the beach equipped to collect and examine flotsam--anything floating that has been washed ashore. Bottles, lost toys, small objects of every description are among his usual finds. But there's no way he could have prepared for one particular discovery: a barnacle-encrusted underwater camera, with its own secrets to share . . . and to keep.

In each of his amazing picture books, David Wiesner has revealed the magical possibilities of some ordinary thing or happening--a frog on a lily pad, a trip to the Empire State Building, a well-known nursery tale. This time, a day at the beach is the springboard into a wildly imaginative exploration of the mysteries of the deep, and of the qualities that enable us to witness these wonders and delight in them.

Flotsam (Caldecott Medal Book) CustomerReview

I have been reading children's books for the past three years. The main things I consider while picking out a book are message and language development. For people like me, books like Flotsam are eye openers. This is a wordless picture book and I REALLY noticed the pictures, the effort the author has put in to the pictures in order to convey the message and was simply astounded. The medium Wiesner uses is watercolor. Every seashell is meticulously drawn. The use of lines and the play of light are so wonderful that one can almost feel its texture. The colors are pleasing to young children making the children focus on the story without overly stimulating them. The placement of pictures also plays a major role in story telling in this wordless storybook.

Wiesner's message through his books - magical things are happening all around us, anything can happen anywhere, do not limit your imagination/dreams and never loose hope on your dreams becoming true(Digression: Check out Wiesner's 1992 Caldecott Medal book TUESDAY. It talks about the dream of frogs coming true. Any one, even frogs can dream and you never know it might just come true! Keep dreaming, it keeps you alive!).

Flotsam is a story in which a boy finds an underwater camera in a beach, washed ashore by the waves. The boy is not able to find the owners of the camera and decides to develop the pictures from the film in the camera. When he looks at the developed pictures, a whole new world is thrown wide open to him. From now on it is a fantasy journey not only for the boy but also to the readers. The older readers who know about the functioning of a `real world' stare open eyed at the mechanical fishes swimming along side the real ones, a family of octopus sitting on a couch reading a book, puffed up puffer fish acting like a hot air balloon, gigantic sea turtles with a whole city on their shell and star fishes of colossal size - that make grey whales look tiny, housing an entire island on them. That's not where the surprise ends, one has to read the book to find out what the final surprise!

It was so surprising how different the adult mind works when compared to a child's mind. I am trying to make some sense of the pictures, and this is exactly how my brain went:

A key wound mechanical fish?!

What do I say if the children ask me to explain this?

May be I can say that this is a marine experiment and the biologists are observing patterns about this school of fish.

Whaaaat? A family of octopus sitting on a couch and reading books?

Aahhha! I see a moving container capsized behind the octopus and the couch must have fallen out of the container. The octopus just happened to sit on it.

What now? Puffer fish flying??? Okay I give up. There is no way in hell I can explain this....

And guess what questions I had to answer? `What is the boy's name?', `Ammaaaa, hermit crab eyes popping out of his head? That's so silly[they put their index fingers on their fore heads and start doing a hermit crab routine. They even came with a voice for the hermit crab]', `The boy has two shovels, one blue and one red. Can I have two shovels?', `Can we put fish on our couch?'. They just surrendered to the story line and digested everything! Gosh, why did I even worry about flying fish and floating aliens? The open mindedness, amazes me.

There was a lot of language involved. By the time we finished reading this book, the boy had a name, `Geeg' (please don't ask me why, I did not name him). When he looks through a ring, his eyes become bigger(Errr.. in the book the boy is looking at a crab through a magnifying glass and Wiesner has painted it from the perspective of some one observing the boy. So you can see normal right eye and part of left eye through the magnifying lens). He is playing on the beach and is not being responsible, always listen to your mommy and daddy Geeg (I thought I was looking at myself and listening to myself)...and so Flotsam from a 2 year old and a 3.5 year old's perspective goes on.....

I purchased this CD for my two older children (9 and 11), not sure how well it would go over. We listened to it for the first time in the car on a long trip. It was quite a giggle for everyone! We loved the comic points in the Canterville Ghost story, especially. Mr. Weiss's rendition of one of the characters had my husband and I in stitches - sounding just like Carol Channing.

I have since purchased 6 other Jim Weiss story CD's and my Girl Scouts have begun to request them when going on trips with the troop.

You won't be disappointed.

The Jungle Book: A Pop-Up Adventure (Classic Collectible Pop-Ups) CustomerReview

This book is a condensed version of the original accompanied with wonderful pop-ups. It has six two-page spreads, but there is also at least one partial-page fold out on every spread (partial pages are half the size or smaller than the main page). The main spreads each have a large pop up. The partial pages, typically two mini two-page spreads themselves, all have a pop up per spread, too. When you turn some of the partial spreads, they trigger changes in the main spread. The pages are full of color, including the back sides of the pop ups. The font is easy to read.

The condensed text works in that you aren't left with gaping holes in the story if you don't know the full version. Know that it is condensed so your favorite part might not be included.

The large pop ups are fabulous and the smaller ones are interesting. For the most part, the pop ups open and close smoothly. I did have trouble with two small ones: -one has a part that is not properly glued and it catches when I try to close it -a part is supposed to spin, but mine spins only some of the time.

This book would be interesting for the very young (with help to deal with the pop ups), tweens/teens who are reading the original story, and collectors. It could spark interest for reluctant readers when paired with the original.

DESCRIPTION OF POP UPS - A description of the pop ups isn't as helpful in general, but it will give you an idea of how many pop ups are included. Also, it may provide insight as to what is included in this condensed version. The list gives the main pop up, then partial page pop ups included on that main spread.

Jungle scene (with moving waterfall)
-Mowgli -Mother Wolf -Baloo -Bagheera
Monkey People in the Lost City (almost 2-foot high!)
-Kaa, the Python -Mowgli, Baloo, Bagheera, and Kaa

The little wooden couple are happy in their building-block house -- until it catches fire. The solution? They transform the house into a fire engine! But then there's so much water that they have to build a boat...

The very youngest can "read" this charming, wordless picture book all by themselves.

Changes, Changes (Aladdin Picture Books) RelateItems

Changes, Changes (Aladdin Picture Books) CustomerReview

Changes, Changes is a wordless picture book showing a couple made of wooden blocks constructing building blocks to make a home. The home catches on fire and they build a fire engine to put the fire out. However, the water causes a flood and they then have to build a boat to sail away on. They arrive safely on shore and build a truck and then a train and, eventually, a new home.

I would recommend this book for children ages 3, 4, and 5. Children these ages enjoy making up stories to go along with wordless books. Many of them also take pleasure in playing with building blocks and will enjoy the images of the blocks being built into various things. In addition, the personification of the couple made out of wooden blocks will appeal to young children. I recommend sharing this book with children for enjoyment. The illustrations were prepared with black pen-and-ink line drawings and separate overlays for the colors. The images do a wonderful job of telling the story without text.

Moses: When Harriet Tubman Led Her People to Freedom (Caldecott Honor Book) Overviews

This poetic book is a resounding tribute to Tubman's strength, humility, and devotion. With proper reverence, Weatherford and Nelson do justice to the woman who, long ago, earned over and over the name Moses.

Moses: When Harriet Tubman Led Her People to Freedom (Caldecott Honor Book) CustomerReview

If you are looking to add a beautifully illustrated picture book to your collection, put this book at the top of your list. Kadir Nelson's dark and gothic-like illustrations are the perfect complement to Carole Boston Weatherford's poetic narrative. As much as I loved the illustrations, however, the verse kind of put me off. The story involves a conversation between Harriet Tubman and God as she travels The Underground Railroad. This fictionalized account is a clever take on Harriet's journey; however, if you are not a particularly spiritual person, you might not enjoy the text as much as others may.

Given the spiritual overtones, I am curious if this book is chosen to be used in schools. The text is almost like one continuous prayer. I would think churches may be more interested in it. While it is no wonder this title is a Caldecott Honor Book, I was especially interested in illustrations; they are like artwork.

The multicultural perspective of this book is obvious. Readers of other cultures can learn about slavery and The Underground Railroad. Especially appealing is that the main character is not only African American, but a woman.

I Can Read and Speak in Spanish (Book + Audio CD) Overviews

A unique learning experience geared to the way children learn best.

The biggest hurdle young children face when learning a new language is stringing words together into coherent sentences. Developmental psychologist and veteran language teacher Maurice Hazan has created an ingenious new way to help kids over that hurdle. The I Can Read and Speak series makes learning fun with an exciting combination of dramatic action, pictures, sounds, symbols and learning activities including flash cards and stickers. Kids are introduced to 60 new words that are used in simple illustrated stories. Learning activities at the end of each story encourage kids to re-create the sentences and create new sentences of their own, using specially designed flash-card symbols. Each book includes:

  • A colorful storybook illustrated with photographs
  • Lively storybook narration (on CD) for proper pronunciation
  • Flash cards and stickers for sentence and story creation
  • Tips for parents on how to adapt the material to their child's learning style

I got this for my 7 year old. Previously we had tried a couple of ways of learning Spanish, and she could understand and respond to basic sentences (give me the blue ball, put on your shirt, etc). But she was very unwilling to speak.

It took us 6 days to go through this book, but by the 2nd day she was walking up to total strangers speaking Spanish. The pictures totally worked for her. There are only a few lessons, so only a few grammatical structures are covered, but she really understood them and could use them.

    Sequel please!!!!

This book is very stimulating for infants and toddlers! Who would've known this simple book would be such a favorite for a 9 month old! My daughter is now 12 months and still loves it. I still remember the day she discovered it... it was in her toy box and she pulled it out and was immediately so fascinated. I think its the real life images she is drawn to and the thick pages that are easy for her to turn. The pictures are nice and clear. I love that is has the words in spanish and english. I am looking forward to the day she will be able to start pointing at the images when I say the words.... which I am sure will be very soon. Out of all the books my daughter has, this is definitely her #1 favorite!

My son loves books and we read all the time. Looking through our extensive children's book collection I realized we didn't have any classic fairy tales. I went searching for a good collection and decided on this one. It is perfect! The illustrations are what you would expect from Mary Englebreit - charming and colorful - perfect for a children's book. He likes to find things "hidden" in the pictures. More importantly to me, the stories are a great length for children's short attention spans. My son is now 19 months and he always sits happily until we are finished. The scary parts are watered down to make it appropriate for young children. (e.g., the wolf lets Little Red Riding Hood and her grandma climb out after receiving a scolding from the wood cutter.) It is also a great collection of stories. This now goes in my basket of "must haves" for baby shower gifts. Love it!

(stories include Jack and the Bean Stalk, Little Red Riding Hood, Puss in Boots, The Little Red Hen, The Emperor's New Clothes, The Three Little Pigs, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, The City Mouse and the County Mouse, The Gingerbread Boy, Hansel & Gretel, The Elves and The Shoemaker, and the Ugly Duckling)

How can you teach a preschooler about how society changes over time? It is a very difficult task, but one accomplished with this book. Filled with fabulous, detailed illustrations, this book compares the way things were done "then" (late 1800s/early 1900s)to how they are "now". I had fun discussions with my 4 year old daughter about how people used to cook,
    shop, and farm, for example.

This is a book published from Great Britain, so there are a few little "Briti-cisms" (i.e. calling a sweater a "jumper"), but it is entirely appropriate for American audiences nonetheless.

Baseball's Best: Five True Stories (Step-Into-Reading, Step 5) CustomerReview

Baseball's Best: Five True Stories is a book about baseball's greatest players, including Hank Aaron, Roberto Clemente, Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson, and Joe DiMaggio. All the players in the book had the most important facts about their lives included in the writing. These tremendous baseball players were the best of their time and continue to be well respected. From the book, a reader will learn many fascinating facts. One example, is when Babe Ruth called his own shot. He pointed to center field indicating where he would hit the ball. When the pitcher threw the ball, Babe hit it right to where he pointed.

The author, Andrew Gutelle, told each biography very well. He even included interesting and sad facts, such as when Roberto Clemente plunged into the ocean in a plane. The crash was caused by a bird getting stuck in the engine of his plane. Clemente was never found. The author used very descriptive writing. He included information on when Hank Aaron hit his 715th homerun and broke Babe Ruth's record of 714 homeruns. Aaron ended his career with 755 homeruns.

There were also great photographs and illustrations by Cliff Spohn. One great example was of Joe DiMaggio up to bat and striking out. This event ended his wining hitting streak. Spohn explained a lot of the events through his work. One really powerful picture was of Jackie Robinson, the first black player in baseball.

This is great book for everyone who loves baseball and its heroes and everyone who wants to learn about baseball and its heroes.
