The One Year Book of Devotions for Girls CustomerReview

Help the young girls in your life to daily dig into God's word with the aid of The One Year Devos For Girls, by Tyndale House Publishers, Inc. Girls ages 8-12 will first read God's word and then a practical life story experience. The "How About You" section allows the reader to examine her life as she answers personal questions. A Bible verse to memorize and a bolded summary statement completes the day's lesson.

The devotional touches on a variety of subjects: worry, friendships, laziness, loving others, trials, heaven, appearance, witnessing and Bible memory, among others. Life quickly passes and important topics may fall to the wayside or be difficult to approach. Reading The One Year Devos For Girls with a daughter makes it easy to discuss crucial issues through realistic and relatable stories.

I do think some of the material may lean towards an older girl. If there is a deeper subject, the author prefaces it.

The most important part of this devotional is that it gives many opportunities for the reader to acknowledge sin and the need for a Savior--Jesus Christ-- in their life.

The One Year Devos For Girls is also great for parent's. It reminds adults of God's eternal truths and promises. The devotional encourages parents to look for teachable Biblical truths in daily life situations.

My 2 year old LOVES this book!!! We "tone down" the fact that some Dinosaurs eat others, but she loves the realistic pictures, loves hearing the names, and learned to identify and pronounce all the Dinosaurs in this book the second day we had it... this book is fantastic! The ONLY drawback is that now our daughter wants more books just like this, and we've not been able to find anything else quite like it.

Her dad reads it to her in Spanish and I do the English version. It was so nice to find a bilingual book that had full sentences, not just random words out of context. We are going to buy the other bilingual Clifford books based on how much our daughter loves this one.

Prayer for a Child CustomerReview

I enjoyed reading this book as a child, and last year, I sent a copy as a gift for a newborn cousin of mine.Oftentimes, when I've delved into the poetry of Rachel Field's 1941 Caldecott medal winner, strains of "The Children's Prayer" from "Hansel and Gretel" (as sung in the film, "One Foot In Heaven", which was released the same year as this book was published) have filtered through my head.
This book would provide a lovely way to spend lap time with little ones because the illustrations are darling and the scenes of a little girl's life as she prays for herself, her family, her most precious personal effects as well as others are so relatable.
I highly recommend this book as a classic that continues to shine its light, and to gently and lovingly reflect the world of children!

I work at a Children's hospital as a Certified Child Life Specialist. I work in the E.R where there are lots of tests and procedures done on children. Our profession uses many types of distraction and calming methods to help these children cope. The one thing that we were missing were Lori Lite's books! I wanted some books that I, and the rest of the staff, could use as a tool to help kids relax and relieve anxiety caused by the hospital. I wanted something that helped "take them away to a safer place" from the anxious environment of an E.R. When I came across these books, it was perfect, just what I was looking for! Parents and kids have found them very useful to help get them through these scary times in the hospital.(Our Favorites: Bubble Riding and A Boy and a Turtle) These books help distract patients through even the toughest tests/procedures. I would highly reccomend these books for any hospital type environment.

Marsupial Sue Book and CD Overviews

If you're a Kangaroo
through and through,
Just do what Kangaroos do.

Young Sue really doesn't like being a kangaroo, so she goes off to find something better. First she tries climbing the trees like a koala, but that doesn't work. Then she wades into the sea like a platypus, but that's no good either. Finally, Sue joins up with some bouncy, jouncy wallabies...and discovers that being a kangaroo isn't so bad, after all.

Using a jaunty waltz rhythm, actor, comedian, and best-selling author John Lithgow reassures children that they can be happy with who they are.

For listening or singing along, a CD of a John Lithgow performance of Marsupial Sue and an instrumental version is included with this book, as is the score of the song.

Marsupial Sue Book and CD RelateItems

Marsupial Sue Book and CD Specifications

Being a kangaroo certainly looks like a lot of fun, what with all the hopping and the hay eating. But who knew all that jumping around could cause such problems? Marsupial Sue, that's who, a smartly dressed young 'roo who can't abide by all the bouncing: "It rattled her brain. It gave her migraine. A backache, sideache, tummyache too."

So John Lithgow recounts in 4/4 time--along with the jaunty, waltzy music and score on the CD that's included--in his second foray into children's books (The Remarkable Farkle McBride being the first). Probably best known as Dick Solomon on TV's 3rd Rock from the Sun, Lithgow brings his comic knack to this Down Under story about the importance of being yourself. Marsupial Sue might be intrigued by the idea of being a climbing koala or prawn-slurping platypus, but with Lithgow's cooing reassurance as the narrator, she eventually comes around: "Be happy with who you are. / Don't ever stray too far from you. / Get rid of that frown / And waltz up and down / beneath a marsupial star. / If you're a kangaroo through and through, / Just do what kangaroos do."

Lithgow will likely never surpass the spiritual contributions he made to our world as Doctor Emilio Lizardo and John Whorfin, but don't hold that against him. Like Farkle, Marsupial Sue is surely worth a read (and a listen), especially with illustrator Jack E. Davis's cool cast of sunglass- and snappy-hat-wearing Aussie animals. (Ages 4 to 8) --Paul Hughes

Marsupial Sue Book and CD CustomerReview

"Marsupial Sue" the book and CD is another brilliant production by the immensely talented John Lithgow, actor-singer-performer extraordinaire and multiple Tony and Emmy awards winner. The heart of the story is about a kangaroo named Sue who wishes for something other than being a kangaroo, but of course discovers in the end that being a kangaroo is not so bad after all. The accompanying CD is a sing-along to the text, recorded in Lithgow's voice and has such a catchy tune that my 3.5 year-old requested I play it over and over, and I didn't mind! I loved singing along to this rhyming song with an infectious beat.

This is a wonderful book not just because of the lesson inherent in it, that of being comfortable being oneself, but also because it helps with early literacy skills, as all of Lithgow's books do - one can sing-along with the text, read-aloud, have discussions with one's child about the different animals found in Australia [kangaroo, koala, platypus, wallaby] and so much more. Plus, it's so much fun!!! Highly recommended.

I Spy Christmas: A Book of Picture Riddles CustomerReview

ISBN 0590458469 - The last I Spy book I had a chance to play with was a board book, aimed at very young readers. This one, for about ages 4 to 8 (although the book itself indicates no age range at all), is quite a leap ahead in difficulty.

Fourteen large images hide various items; clues are given in rhyming text. Each detailed and colorful image takes up two facing pages. The photos are Christmas- and winter-themed and most have a slightly old-fashioned look. In the back are two pages of "extra credit riddles" and some interesting info about how the images in this book were created.

Unlike some of the easier I Spy books, this one does not include the answers in the back. Photographer Walter Wick and author Jean Marzollo get tons of credit from me, first and foremost for being able to make these books for various levels of difficulty and making them all well. This one, an oversized hardcover, is an excellent Christmas book that will entertain long after Valentine's Day - even adults will find it hard to resist the challenge.

Our Family Tree: An Evolution Story CustomerReview

I was looking for a book that would help my son (5 yrs) better understand what I believe about science and evolution as oposed to what his father believes (the classic Christian creation story). I needed something more than just telling him that I don't believe god created people and that's that. So I went searching. And this was my first hit, my first purchase, and I am SO happy with it.

We just received our package yesterday and my son and I sat and read the book. He loved it. Like another reviewer said, it is very hard for him to grasp millions of years, but I found that just explaining to him in terms of a "long time ago" a "long, long time ago" and a "long, long, long time ago" helped him get the basic idea. He asked questions, and made observations, and was fascinated by the pictures.

This book is just the start in educated him on science, but it is a good one. I've recommended it to all my similarly perplexed friends for their children.

I got my first dover coloring book about 30 years ago and have been hooked. I now have a collection of about 20. They are kind of hard to find in retail and when you do the selection is poor.

I find coloring to be very relaxing when you are stressed. I also cannot just watch tv I like to be doing crochet or cross stitching, coloring.

These books are very well done as far as the drawings are concerned. They can be very intricate. Some are made more for children but many would be hard for a child under say 10yrs old to do and feel good about.

They are best done with colored pencils as you can get really good at shading and make them really pretty.

I highly recommend this and many others. I do own this specific book.

I went into this expecting nothing too exciting but I was very surprised at how great this book was! The plot at the beginning was a little slow to start but once it got going I was stuck to every word that Sarah MacLean wrote. I honestly could not put the novel down and when I had to go to work all I could think about was getting back home to finish reading it. I would highly recommend this book to others that like Historical Fiction novels especially from this time period.

Angle Of Repose (Turtleback School & Library Binding Edition) (Contemporary American Fiction) Review

Lyman Ward is the narrator of this Pulitzer prize winning story. He is 58 years old and a disabled historian who is dying of a bone disease. He is researching his grandparent's lives (Susan and Oliver Ward) to find out why they were estranged towards the later part of their marriage. His grandmother was a talented artist and author. She married Oliver Ward in the late 1800's and moved west with her new husband who was a mining engineer. Through the letters his grandmother sent to her best friend Augusta, Ward pieces together his grandparents' lives in the 19th century as they move from the Northeast to California, Colorado, Mexico and Idaho - with his grandfather trying to make a living for his family managing a large mine and eventually a major irrigation/water diversion project. A family accident ultimately drives a wedge between his grandparents - whose relationship became increasingly strained as each year of struggles passes - Susan Ward looking for a upperly mobile life style (the arts & culture, private school education for kids, stable home) while Oliver Ward was in pursuit struggling to achieve this but always falling a bit short. The lessons that Lyman gains from his research on his grandparents sheds light on his relationship with his wife and his marriage.

* Angle of Repose is beautifully written and brings to life the story, the time and the place.

* I found the novel to be deeply introspective on both Lyman and his grandparents. Lyman, in particular, was fascinating. I found myself wanting the story to toggle back to him more frequently as the story moved from history to present.

* Stegner brilliantly portrays his grandfather as chasing the American Dream - a good stable home for his family - doing something meaningful in life - living a life with hard work, integrity and honesty.

5* - I rated this book a full 5 stars with an asterisk. Stegner labors of the details over the first 15 years of marriage and then slams home that last 40 years.

* I did not find this story to be a page turner. While the novel was often times emotionally moving, there were many passages that I found to be very slow and meandering - - and particularly so with the deep, wide and extended descriptions of the environment and settings - these passages could have used some hair scissors to thin (heresy statement I know for what some describe one of the top 100 books of all time). Nonetheless, this is a great book that will stay with me for some time.

excellent book - Maggie - USA
I read this novel several years ago but I do remember how good it was. I believe it won the Pulitzer prize. Also, I remember that the author based some of the story on his own ancestor (grandmother?).

Set in the American west, this is the story of a husband and wife who travel west for the husband's job in the mining industry. He is intermittently employed and the wife is a writer and illustrator and able to help support the family with her income. This makes problems for the family. It's a rich telling.

Enjoy

I think I'll read it again!

A classic cross-cultural examination - Eric P. Johnson -
I loved this book, and I think it needs to be approached as a serious piece of literature. Reviewers complaining of it being too slow should go back to their John Grisham novels.

Not to repeat what other reviewers have already said, but after rereading sections of this book, one thing I think Stegner was trying to accomplish was an examination of the mores of relationships and marriage from three very distinct generations: That of the narrator's grandmother from the 1800s, that of the narrator himself from the early 1900s, to that of the current generation, the 1960s. I've always been a liberal and very sympathetic to the counter-culture, but I think Stegner does a good job of pointing out some of the short-comings of the, then current, movement. He is really performing an analysis of the value of traditions like marriage and family and other underpinnings of society that he sees lacking in the counter-culture.

Beyond this, I would say that it's a beautifully written and engaging story. What I really loved about it when I first read it was the development of the characters and how much I really wanted to see their marriage succeed. I never read a novel that I so fell in love with the characters and felt such sadness when they failed. I felt completely tied to the characters and their lives. I think that is the beauty of such a sweeping narrative, that it gives space for the characters to come to life and breath.

I think "Angle of Repose" is a brillant book and has much to say about the nature of life, our struggles and striving to achieve, if not happiness, then that place of comfort, that angle of repose.

Go West! - exlibris -
After reading this author's novel "Crossing to Safety", I was excited to begin reading this title. And, I am not disappointed. Wallace Stegner's ability to tell a story is, in my opinion, one of the best narrative styles I have ever read. His prose flows off the page easily and I found myself to be engaged in both stories within this novel. Some reviewers have stated their disappointment about so many trials and misfortunes of the main character's subject Susan B. Ward and her husband Oliver, but I believe that Stegner was right on target in being true to settling in the West during the late 1800s.
This novel should be added to mandatory reading lists in colleges throughout this country and maybe some high school AP classes as well. Take your time with this novel and enjoy the style and story, you won't be disappointed.

The House of the Scorpion Review

Couldn't put it down! Read it in a day. A dystopian tale whose commentary on present-day society rivals and even surpasses popular dystopians like Hunger Games and Uglies. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

This dystopian tale about a runaway clone is NOT your typical sci fi adventure (although it has the action and fast-paced plotting of one). Rather, it is a sociological expose of the hidden natures of mankind in general, showing how both sides of our political spectrum are inherently dangerous and self-interested, and that women and young people are the only beings sensible enough to rise above man's ridiculous power plays and establish peace. Entertaining AND very thought-provoking. Loved it!

The House of the Scorpion Overview

Matteo Alacrán was not born; he was harvested. His DNA came from El Patrón, lord of a country called Opium -- a strip of poppy fields lying between the United States and what was once called Mexico. Matt's first cell split and divided inside a petri dish. Then he was placed in the womb of a cow, where he continued the miraculous journey from embryo to fetus to baby. He is a boy now, but most consider him a monster -- except for El Patrón. El Patrón loves Matt as he loves himself, because Matt is himself.

As Matt struggles to understand his existence, he is threatened by a sinister cast of characters, including El Patrón's power-hungry family, and he is surrounded by a dangerous army of bodyguards. Escape is the only chance Matt has to survive. But escape from the Alacr n Estate is no guarantee of freedom, because Matt is marked by his difference in ways he doesn't even suspect.

The House of the Scorpion Specifications

Fields of white opium poppies stretch away over the hills, and uniformed workers bend over the rows, harvesting the juice. This is the empire of Matteo Alacran, a feudal drug lord in the country of Opium, which lies between the United States and Aztlan, formerly Mexico. Field work, or any menial tasks, are done by "eejits," humans in whose brains computer chips have been installed to insure docility. Alacran, or El Patron, has lived 140 years with the help of transplants from a series of clones, a common practice among rich men in this world. The intelligence of clones is usually destroyed at birth, but Matt, the latest of Alacran's doubles, has been spared because he belongs to El Patron. He grows up in the family's mansion, alternately caged and despised as an animal and pampered and educated as El Patron's favorite. Gradually he realizes the fate that is in store for him, and with the help of Tam Lin, his bluff and kind Scottish bodyguard, he escapes to Aztlan. There he and other "lost children" are trapped in a more subtle kind of slavery before Matt can return to Opium to take his rightful place and transform his country.

Nancy Farmer, a two-time Newbery honoree, surpasses even her marvelous novel, The Ear, The Eye and the Arm in the breathless action and fascinating characters of The House of the Scorpion. Readers will be reminded of Orson Scott Card's Ender in Matt's persistence and courage in the face of a world that intends to use him for its own purposes, and of Louis Sachar's Holes in the camaraderie of imprisoned boys and the layers of meaning embedded in this irresistibly compelling story. son couldn't read this book fast enough - Robin Ryan, author and career coach - Seattle, WA United States

Plot holes, and rather strong political overtones - Krystyna Westfield - TX USA
I got this book because my book club selected it. I know it won a bunch of awards, but I'm not sure exactly why. I understand that it is a junior reading level, but I found it lacking even still. My husband, who is a huge sci-fi fan also read it and was pretty unimpressed. There are several glaring plot holes in the book. And the political messages were very overt; after a while it was annoying how intense the author's views were on certain topics. All in all, an ok story to read in an afternoon, but one that I'm turning right back around and selling, and would not read a second time.

Poorly written, badly researched, propaganda - Lirpa Spaz - Belgium
I HATED IT, and hated it on so many levels I truly do not know where to begin.

First of all, I will acknowledge one aspect of the story that I found positive. This is the story of Matt, a clone. Matt is raised in a shack on the opium plantation of drug lord, El Patron. He is El Patron's clone, grown for the purpose of being spare body parts for El Patron. In this world (the near future), clones are considered property, livestock. The embroyos are implanted in cows, so the people of this world have come to the conclusion that anything born from cows is not human. After they are "born," their brains are purposely damaged so that the people can further consider these clones as beasts instead of human abominations of nature. This campaign of dehumanization has resonance throughout history. The Jews, the enslaved Africans in America, any person of possible Arab descent today....all of these races have undergone a campaign of dehumanization. Those in power subtly manipulated the general population until that population was able to excuse widespread cruelty in their own minds. We always look at those historical periods with disgust and wonder how anyone could ever accept that level of cruelty, and yet it happens over and over again throughout history.

A few reasons why I did NOT like this novel:

1. The author cannot seem to find her main point or theme. If her theme is the importance of individuality, I think she fails. The book ends with something that complete negates a theme that highlights the importance of individuality---so it can't be that.

2. The author's knowledge of cloning is all wrong. She attempts to sway her audience against the entire IDEA without fully understanding the concept. Clones would not be exact copies of their DNA donors. Environment is almost as largely responsible for who we are as our DNA is. At one point, I think she is going to explore this knowledge further, but I ended up being convinced that she just doesn't KNOW that even PHYSICAL traits are affected by environmental factors. Fingerprints are even affected by the force and pressure of things happening in the womb. Identical twins have the same DNA, and yet they are not identical. The same basic principles apply to clones. So, the thing that happens at the end...impossible.

3. The plot is all over the place. It has no direction.

4. The characterizations are flat. The emotions are hollow. The reader has no background for anyone, or sense of setting.

5. The author breaks the cardinal rule of writing: "Show! Don't tell!!" She tells and tells and tells, but never SHOWS us anything. For instance, we are TOLD that the character of Steven is "okay." He's apparently the one character in this drug lord's family that is not evil. Yet, we are not SHOWN this. Why is Steven "okay?" How does Matt know this? Then, when Steven betrays Matt, are we supposed to be appalled? We have no emotional attachment to Steven. Why did we think he WOULDN'T betray Matt?

6. Like I said, there is no continuity. No over-arching theme. After leaving the compound, Matt goes to another country. Once there it seems that this story is devolving into a diatribe on socialism. Which, irritated me INCREDIBLY. I couldn't be more sick of this "evils of socialism" storyline. However, at least going on about socialism was giving this novel a POINT!!!! YET, it didn't commit to the evil socialism theme. It turned out that the government was something else entirely. So, I don't know what that bit about the socialist orphanage was. It was completely out of place.

Then....the story devolved further....and went a place that left me completely flummoxed and angry that I wasted my time with this horrible written dreck (Matt at one point says: I was, quite literally, the underdog. Oh really Ms. Author? Was he LITERALLY an underdog? Not figuratively?).

Ultimately, I am most angry that this type of fiction is winning awards. That our children are assigned badly-written propaganda to read in high school English instead of quality literature
